Ashes and snow

“In exploring the shared language and poetic sensibilities of all animals, I am working towards rediscovering the common ground that once existed when people lived in harmony with animals. The images depict a world that is without beginning or end, here or there, past or present.”
Gregory Colbert, creator of Ashes and snow.

Elephant and girl

I first came across the work of Gregory Colbert in 2007 at a friend’s house in Ubud, Bali. The photographic images in a beautiful book printed in Italy feature the spiritual interaction of humans and animals are unlike any other photographs in the world today. They are breathtakingly beautiful and evoke a deep sense of compassion and inter-relationship between man and animal.

The film Ashes and Snow is a work of art that gently transports you through the waterways, temples and jungles of Burma, Africa, Sri Lanka, Borneo and Egypt – with a beautiful ambient soundtrack that is other worldly.

As a photographer or film maker it will either inspire you to reach greater heights or you’ll not pick up your camera again, realising Gregory Colbert says it all – and so eloquently – in Ashes and Snow. If you are into nature, beauty and the spirit of life this film is about as good as it gets.

“The most arresting aspect of Gregory Colbert’s photographs … is their air of dreamlike calm. The serenity pervades the sepia-toned pictures.”
Smithsonian

“Colbert’s work feels timeless and sacred. It resonates with luminous, essential wisdom speaking through the ages … Colbert’s work operates in a parallel universe to ours, an earnest, refreshing, post-ironic world where pure wonder and awe still reside.”
The Globe and Mail

“The exhibition presents a marvellous vision and transcends time and space.”
Goethe

“Ashes and Snow is an expression of the poetic possibilities of a harmonious relationship between animals and man.”
